Open Question: what telephone service providers are available in Massachusetts?

Interested in telephone landline/DSL internet service! Cell phone and cable services are not needed. Live in SE Massachusetts Bristol County. Looking for service providers other than Verizon. Verizon is brutally expensive even with their combo packages ($93 monthly for my present service package) and the additional State/Federal/usage charges are ridiculous, totaling $14+ monthly. Can anyone suggest an alternate telephone/internet service provider with more reasonable rates? Would it be very difficult to transfer over services to the new provider? Please note that the only reason that I use Verizon is that they are the ones that provide telephone installations in the Fall River Massachusetts area.
