I was on a 4 lane divided highway turning onto a second 4 lane highway. The light had just turned green and I turned right and proceeded in the far right lane. After going a couple hundred feet I realize there is a school bus picking up children in the opposite lane picking up children, and almost immediately, I was pulled over by the police. I explained to the police officer both that I was unaware of needed to stop for the bus in that situation and that I had not seen the bus until I had already driven past it. The cop gave me a citation and told me to challenge it in court explaining the situation. What's the best way to explain this to a magistrate? Other info, The highway I turned onto had just become undivided at the intersection previously being a divided highway which it is legal to pass a stopped bus. There was 2 lanes of traffic in each direction as well as one turning lane at the point where I passed the bus. I have a terrible driving record from speeding tickets and assume the magistrate sill not enjoy seeing me again.... Read More »
